Gary, Indiana police say a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a neighbor who became enraged when the teen laughed at him when the man discovered that his home had been burglarized. Lt. Thomas Pawlak tells the Post-Tribune Kobe Jones was pronounced dead Friday evening at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Pawlak says a neighbor shot Jones nine times after the teen laughed at him as the man began yelling in anger outside his burglarized home at the 1000 block of Polk Street.
The home was burglarized at around 12:30 p.m. and when the shooter and his girlfriend returned home five hours later they were visibly upset and ‘making a scene’. Pawlak says the man and his girlfriend fled the crime scene in a car but returned about two hours later and were arrested. He says they were being held at the city jail and charges are pending.
A telephone message left on Saturday with Gary’s police spokeswoman seeking additional information was not immediately returned.
‘I was told that my son was laughing and the guy shot him dead,’ Jones’ father, Kaunda Jones, told NBC. ‘The death of a child is horrible. Nobody plans to bury their child at 13-years-old,’ said the boy’s forlorn step-mother.’
The teen was one of 12 siblings and was described as being a ‘funny and outgoing’ boy.
