A fugitive former mayor and his wife, whom the government has blamed for ordering the disappearance of 43 student teachers, have been captured by Mexican police.Jose Luis Abarca, who was previously mayor of Iguala, and his wife Maria de los Angeles Pineda were found in Mexico City, Jose Ramon Salinas, spokesman for federal police, said on his Twitter account.The student teachers vanished after being taken into custody by police and allegedly handed over to a drug gang in the southwestern city of Iguala after clashes on the night of September 26.
The government is still searching for the students, whose disappearance has shocked the country and undermined President Enrique Pena Nieto’s claims that Mexico has become safer under his watch.
