Police have opened an investigation after a groom was shot in the head at his own wedding – due to a shotgun celebration misfiring.The wedding took place in Hissar, northern India, close to the capital New Delhi.The groom, whose marriage was called-off, suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive the incident.Although outlawed, celebratory firing at weddings and other events is common in the country, across South Asia and in other regions.
Station House Officer (SHO) Mandeep Singh told Indian news website ANI: “We have registered a case on the basis of the statement of the injured person’s father.”An SHO is the term for the person in charge of a police station in India and Pakistan.
The incident comes after another man was hit and killed by a bullet apparently fired by celebrating members of his wedding party in Uttar Pradesh in February.
The groom, who fell from his horse after being hit, was taken to hospital in nearby Lucknow, where doctors declared him dead.
