According to The Sun, the Spice Girls are planning a huge reunion gig at London’s Hyde Park for July 2017, despite a series of setbacks. Three of the pop stars – Melanie Brown, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton – are already on board with the project. It had been expected the group would mount an imminent return for their 21st anniversary and a number of hints had been dropped by some of the girls.
The paper writes that the girls met at Geri Horner’s home last week where they hashed out the plan to celebrate their iconic single Wannabe turning 21. While Victoria Beckham has already declined to work with her former group – which propelled her to fame in the 1990s – it’s now thought she might reconsider.
A source also told The Sun:
‘It gives them a year to plan everything and make sure their comeback is spectacular. It would be the most-talked about gig of the year.’
Mel B also told the paper:
‘I am keeping tight-lipped. There are lots of discussions going on. Right now I am in the studio working on my own album and that is my focus. I’m taking it slowly.’
A source told The Mirror recently:
‘Mel C has been telling friends it’s not happening – not for the anniversary and not next year. She’s not interested in revisiting the band, and neither is Victoria. Their decision has made it impossible for the other three to go ahead with plans to tour again.’
And earlier in the year a source close to the Liverpudlian singer told The Sun it was unlikely she would rejoin the group.
‘Mel C is out of the reunion for now. She has essentially left the band to focus on a more serious music career,’ he said. She loves the girls but it just didn’t feel right for her to reunite with them at the moment.’
Meanwhile, Victoria has turned her back on music once and for all and is focused on her successful designer fashion range. Her rep previously said:
‘Victoria has been very respectful about the fabulous time they had together in the past, however her focus is now very much her family and fashion business.’
The girls last performed together at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, where they arrived in the stadium in a gem encrusted black cab, singing hits such as Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life.
