The Lagos State Government says it has banned the use of motorcycles, popularly called okada, and air cool vans to transport meat and meat products in all abattoirs and slaughter slabs across the state. It said the measure was meant to ensure a well-structured meat transport system which befitted the status of a megacity.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Oluwatoyin Suarau, at a stakeholders meeting with representatives of the Lagos State Butchers Association, Eko Refrigerated Meat Van Association, Apapa Park Transporter, as well as the Sheep and Goat Butchers Association, said only the “refrigerated meat vans” were authorised to transport meat products in the state.
“Anyone who transport meat products using other means other than the authorised refrigerated meat vans will have their meat seized. The air cool vans, which were introduced in 2008, had been phased out and must not operate in the state again.”
Suarau also warned against carrying of meat products in polythene bags and unauthorised vehicles, adding that the government had zero tolerance for okada on the premises of abattoirs and slaughter slabs.
“The government will provide more refrigerated meat vans for effective transport of meat in the state. New refrigerated meat vans will be bought to replace rickety ones.
“The government is determined to ensure a healthy and hygienic transport of meat within the state,” he said.
