A man who jumped into the Lagos lagoon from the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge on Friday morning, prompting hours of search and rescue has been identified as Oluseyi Adekunle. It was learnt that officials of the Lekki Concession Company spotted the victim through their closed circuit cameras as he removed his clothes and shoes before jumping. His identity was determined through the ATM card and other documents found inside his bag. CCTV footage appeared to show him undressing and looking around to see that he was alone before plunging into the lagoon.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said it received a distress call from the LCC that the victim jumped into the lagoon at about 10am. A statement from LASEMA at about 6pm said there had not been any sign of the body in the water hours after recover operation started.
It appeared that LASEMA later got the identity of the victim but the General Manager LASEMA, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, said his family had been contacted. He added that all items found on the bag left behind were handed over to the Nigerian Police from Maroko Division for further investigation. He, however, assured that his officials and other responders would stay on the ground till the body was recovered.
It would be recalled that a number of suicides and attempted suicides in the Lagos lagoon were recorded early in the year. One of the victims was a doctor, Allwell Orji, whose body was recovered days after he jumped into the lagoon in March.
