Snapchat users’ worlds fell apart last month as they installed a new update which changed everything about the app. The backlash was so ferocious that Snapchat’s valuation and stock price plunged following a tweet from Kylie Jenner which said she never opens it anymore.
You might think that the upgrade was a huge act of selfie harm. But now all the fire and fury has died down, the explosion of anger appears to have been extremely good publicity for Snapchat. SensorTower, a tech analysis firm, said the number of new people downloading Snapchat increased by 55% following the redesign.
This growth comes despite a dramatic increase in the volume of negative user ratings for the app, as well as headline-making social media backlash to the changes,’ it wrote in a blog post. ‘Before the redesign went live, Snapchat had nearly dropped out of the U.S. iPhone top 10 for free apps, something that has only happened three times since 2014. Today, the app is ranked No. 5 overall.’ ‘While this new surge in interest can be viewed as a net positive, the verdict is out on whether these new users were drawn in by the promise of an easier-to-navigate app or simply a desire to see for themselves what this polarizing update is all about.’
