Cardi B’s pregnancy, widely rumoured for weeks before she revealed a prominent baby bump on Saturday evening, is cause for celebration, it is also a two-fingered salute to those who initially doubted their relationship.
Talking to the May issue of GQ, the 25-year old New Yorker, Cardi – real name Belcalis Almanzar – admitted the early stages of their romance was hindered by the whisperings of friends and their general misgivings of each other.
‘… we was in love with each other but we didn’t really trust in each other,’ she explained. ‘It was like a competition of who’s gonna hit each other up first. I don’t want to hit him up first; he will hit me up first.
‘People used to put things in my head: “He gonna leave you. He be f***ing with mad b***hes.’ People used to put things in his head: “Cardi, she’s a dog. Don’t trust her.”‘
She added: ‘We never really trusted each other because I always feel like he could get any girl he wants—what makes me think he’s gonna want me? I think he felt the same way. N***as want to be with me, and b***hes wanna be with him.’
The couple eventually went public during an appearance at Super Bowl LI in Houston, Texas on February 5 2017.
