Arsenal will appoint Unai Emery as their new manager this week after the former Paris Saint-Germain coach won unanimous backing in the club’s boardroom. According to the BBC’s David Ornstein, Arsenal chose the 46-year-old Spanish coach, who has left French champions PSG after two years in the French capital where he won Ligue 1, the French League Cup and the French Cup this season. See his tweet below…

Emery’s most notable body of work was winning three successive Europa League titles as Sevilla coach between 2014 and 2016. He is infamously remembered for the 6-1 defeat at Barcelona last season in the Champions League last 16 that saw PSG squander a 4-1 lead from the first leg.

Arsenal apparently opted against appointing former player Mikel Arteta as their next manager due to his lack of experience. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Arsenal majority shareholder Stan Kroenke and chief executive Ivan Gazidis decided that appointing former Gunners midfielder Arteta would be a risk because he lacks managerial experience at the top level.

It is also claimed Arteta was closing to becoming the club’s new manager, but the 36-year-old Spaniard now seems likely to continue in his assistant manager’s role alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Former PSG coach Unai Emery had been strongly linked with the job, and Marca claimed he was in London to discuss the role with Arsenal on Monday.
