It was gathered that Mr. Ekanem lured the victim into his apartment when the members of his family were not around, used words of mouth to confuse her and she fell victim. He reportedly fondled her breasts and inserted his fingers into her private part before he would penetrate her.
However, before he could penetrate her, he was caught by one of their neighbours who raised alarm and the victim realized herself. She claimed that she was deceived by Baba (Mr. Ekanem) and did not know how he lured her into the act.
The sexual assault was reported at Ilupeju Police Division; Ekanem was arrested and detained for sexual penetration. It was gathered that he admitted that he inserted his finger into her private part but that he did not penetrate her because of the size of his joystick.
He was found culpable and charged before Ogba Magistrates court for the alleged offence. The prosecutor informed the court that the victim was a minor and they were living in the same area where the incident happened.
The court did not take his plea and denied him bail as well. The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Peter Nwaka, ordered him to be remanded in prison custody and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to DPP for advice.
The matter was adjourned till 3rd October, 2018 for the report of DPP advice to be available. It was gathered that if the DPP found him culpable, he will be prosecuted for rape and if found guilty, he may be jailed up to 10 years for the alleged offence.
