An African immigrant suffering from tuberculosis has escaped from a reception centre in Vicenza province, Italy, where several cases of the sickness are being treated. According to reports, the police and health officials are doing all they can to locate the escapee in order to avoid the spread of the disease to others.
“The increase in cases of TB and the spread of this very serious disease between immigrants and non-EU citizens requires an energetic and timely response from the health authorities, I am sure that the health officials of Vicenza will field every form of prophylaxis useful to effectively combat the phenomenon “. Roberto Ciambetti , president of the Veneto Regional Council said.
He continued; “the vast majority of cases are registered among non-EU citizens, many of whom are illegal immigrants who do not understand the dangers of their situation. One thing I would like to underline: it is not about creating unnecessary alarms, because the Veneto health care is able to face the scenario.
“What is certain is that the worst predictions are taking shape: for years, and just starting from Sandrigo, we had denounced the dangers of the system of indiscriminate reception and without controls, but in the past, unfortunately, on the protection of the public interest have prevailed other logic that now we begin to discount”.
