The bishop who led Aretha Franklin’s funeral has apologized to Ariana Grande for touching her inappropriately on stage. Viewers who watched the video on Friday noticed not only Bill Clinton’s ogling eye, but also the touchy-feely preacher who appeared to touch Ariana’s breasts as he talked to the pop star. Ariana, 25, had just finished her rendition of You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman when the exchange took place.
Viewers took to Twitter with the hashtag #RespectAriana to stick up for the singer, who had been criticized for wearing a short dress by trolls on social media who deemed her outfit inappropriate.
One user said: ‘The fact that a woman was disrespected multiple times on live television by men who are in positions of power blows my mind. Just imagine what happens behind closed doors. This was totally inappropriate, a short dress is NOT an invitation. #RespectAriana.’
Earlier today, the bishop responded to critics and expressed his apologies saying that he hugged all performers – male and female. In an interview with The Associated Press he said: ‘It would never be my intention to touch any woman’s breast… I don’t know I guess I put my arm around her. ‘Maybe I crossed the border, maybe I was too friendly or familiar but again, I apologise.’
Bishop Charles also apologised for making fun of her name and said: ‘I personally and sincerely apologise to Ariana and to her fans and to the whole Hispanic community.’ While Ariana looked uncomfortable, she is yet to comment on the incident.
