British couple have died in a devastating flash flood in Majorca after the taxi they were in was caught in torrential rain. Spanish police confirmed the British couple were among five killed in the extreme weather in the town of Sant Lorrenc, about 40 miles east of the capital Palma, on Tuesday night. A huge wave of muddy water engulfed the town after a river burst its banks in the heavy rain.
Cars were washed away and several people are believed to be missing, local media report. The taxi driver is said to be among those missing and it is not yet known whether the two Britons killed were tourists or expats.
A spokesman for the emergency services said their bodies were found inside the vehicle that had been ‘swept away by flash floods’. ‘Five people including two British nationals have died,’ the spokesman said. ‘Our work now is focussed on searching for those people who remain missing.’
