Riyad Mahrez sixth minute goal earned Manchester City a hard-fought 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspurs in Monday’s English Premier League clash at the Wembley stadium reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The Algerian winger poked in Raheem Sterling’s cut-back cross to take unbeaten Manchester City back to the top of the English Premier League standings.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City now lead Liverpool with a superior goal difference. Tottenham are now five points off adrift of the league leaders.

Mahrez came close to doubling Manchester City’s lead in the 28th minute but his right-foot shot was tipped onto the post and behind for a corner by Hugo Lloris in goal for Spurs

Tottenham struggled to create any clear-cut chances and went into the half-time break trailing 1-0.

In the second half, Tottenham dominated play but failed to take advantage of a City defence that looked shaky most times when they were under pressure.

Eric Lamela missed a glorious late chance to equalise after he was played through on goal by Dele Alli but the Argentine blazed his shot wide.

Erikson and Harry Kane also had chances to earn Spurs a share of the spoil but they missed.

Manchester City have now also equaled their club record of six successive Premier League clean sheets and become the first non-London based team in the competition’s history to win five successive matches in the capital.

Tottenham will hope for an immediate response when they clash with West Ham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before returning to Premier League action on Saturday evening against Wolves.

Meanwhile, City will be confident of extending their unbeaten run against Fulham in midweek and Southampton on Sunday.
