A 25-year old, Abraham David, has been arrested, charged before a court in Lagos and remanded in prison custody for stealing loaves of bread. It was gathered that David pleaded guilty before the Isolo Magistrates court for stealing and the court ordered his remand in prison custody for facts and sentence.
It was gathered that David was employed by a baker, one Mrs. Jenny Chris, to sell bread along Ajao Road in Ajao Estate, Lagos. It was said that when he rendered account, the baker discovered that the account was not correct and he was asked what happened. He explained that he used to eat from the bread whenever he was hungry while hustling at the bus stop.
The baker did not take it lightly and handed him over to the police at Ajao Division for stealing. She then calculated the number of loaves of bread he did not render account for and claimed that it was N18, 000. She asked him to pay the money but he replied that he had no such amount to pay.
Thus, he was charged before the court for stealing as the complainant said it will serve as deterrent for other workers who might try such in future.
He pleaded guilty. The prosecutor, Mr. Oje Uagbale, asked the court for a short adjournment to enable him to present the facts for sentence since he pleaded guilty.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Teluwo, ordered him to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter till 18th October, 2018, when the prosecutor will present the facts for his sentence.
When P.M Express correspondent contacted David, he said that he ate the bread and there was no point to lie before the court but that the amount the baker claimed was not true.
It was gathered that David will spend some months in prison if he was found guilty and sentenced accordingly.
