A passer-by told of how a dying man pleaded to be taken to hospital after being gunned down outside his own home. Leroy Ottey, 25, died after a shooting on Wednesday evening in Wavertree.
Mr Ottey, known locally as Mari, had just got out of a taxi when he was shot. He died in hospital during the early hours of Thursday morning.
The local man, who asked not be named, said: ”There was a woman with him who was screaming.
‘When I arrived at the scene the victim was laying on the floor outside his house.
‘He had suffered several gunshot wounds to his body, and one to his knee. But he was conscious and breathing.
‘He was saying ‘I have been shot, I have been shot. Get a car and take me to hospital.’
‘I remember I said to him ‘who shot you?’ but he didn’t respond. A woman who was with him then shouted at me. She told me not to ask ‘stupid questions.’
‘More neighbours started coming out of their homes to try and help.
‘The scene was a bit like out of a film, but there was not that much blood.
‘I thought he might have survived. I was shocked when I heard that he had died.’
An Alderson Road resident said he heard several ‘loud bangs’ and then saw a black Audi pulling away from the scene.
He said: ‘The car pulled away quickly but there was no screeching of tyres or anything like that.’
Another neighbour said they heard ‘several loud bangs in the street and screaming.’
At this stage of the investigation, it has not been established if the gunman was in a car or on foot.
