A mother and her two babies, aged two and three, were among six passengers that died in an auto crash in Akwa Ibom State on Saturday.
It was learnt that two passenger vehicles, a bus and a taxi cab, collided in the Ikot Ese end of the Afahaobong-Iwukem Road in the Etim Ekpo LGA.Medics, who attended to nine passengers that were injured at the Divine Love Hospital, Iwukem, said the six passengers died before they were brought to the hospital.
“We battled to save some souls, but this place is too small to address such emergency because we lack basic facilities and blood as some had lost so much blood when they were brought here.
“Since we don’t have a mortuary facility here, the dead were later moved to the nearby Azumini General Hospital in Abia State.
Spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, Mr Justice Agwu, confirmed the incident.
Agwu on Monday decried the unnecessary carnage on Akwa Ibom roads, noting that the people were not taking advantage of FRSC enlightenment programmes in churches, schools and other public places.
He said strict enforcement of speed limiter regime had been in force with commercial vehicles, noting that it could be extended to all vehicles next year.
