Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos state, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), were the cynosure of all eyes at the national convention of the ruling party in Abuja on Saturday.
The duo walked into the Eagle Square, venue of the convention, hand-in-hand and sat together to the admiration of the party members.
This generated reactions on social media as many lauded the sportsmanship put up by both men.
Sanwo-Olu had challenged Ambode in the race to secure the ticket of the party for the 2019 governorship election.
With 970,851 votes, Sanwo-Olu defeated Ambode who secured 72,901 votes. The governor accepted his loss and thanked the winner.
The former banker had the backing of Bola Tinubu, national leader of the party, and the state party excos as the candidate of the party over the incumbent governor. This led into a bitter campaign between the two.
While addressing a press conference at government house, Alausa, Ikeja last week, Ambode alleged that Sanwo-Olu was arrested for spending fake dollars at a night club in the US and was also mentally unfit to lead the state.
In his response, Sanwo-Olu said he had forgiven the governor but he was sure that Ambode would regret his “descent into such a low conduct” if given a chance to reflect over what he said.
About 7,000 delegates from all over the country are currently at he venue to choose the party’s flagbearer for next year’s presidential election.
