Over 300 toilets have been removed from a construction site and taken to a safe area.
The toilets were built in an open, vacant space in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Residents welcomed their removal as they said criminals raped and robbed people at night and used the toilets as their hideout.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has moved the toilets to NU30, where there are people living nearby.
Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki told Daily Sun: “The toilets are being relocated to NU30, where there are identified beneficiaries. “This decision was taken to prevent vandalism of the toilets.”
Resident Noni Mgidi (37) said she was pleased the structures were being taken away.
“People were being robbed by criminals who hid in these toilets,” she said.
She said residents stole materials in broad daylight.
Another resident, Khanyi Mkai (49), said she was tired of hearing the desperate screams of people being attacked at night.
“I don’t know why the toilets were put here in the first place,” she said. “The municipality knows that there were no beneficiaries using the toilets on that site.
“A lot of money was wasted on this project.“Who’s paying the workers to demolish the toilets? “It’s our money that’s being wasted here.”
