Ahead of the general elections in Nigeria in 2019, the United States Government on Tuesday said that it had no preferred candidate to emerge President of the country.

Giving the position during a telephonic press briefing with journalists from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, South Sudan and Zimbabwe ahead of his visit to the continent, US Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of African Affairs, Ambassador Tibor Nagy, stated that their emphasis was not on who emerged triumphant among all those jostling to be Nigeria’s President but for the eventual winner to put the interest of the citizens at heart.

He said, “Nigeria is the gateway to Africa and that is why the United States considers it as an important development partner on the continent.

“The United States does not take any position or support any particular candidate for elections. Our concern is for each administration to serve the people well.”

He challenged youths in Nigeria and across the continent to rise up for what was right and make Africa great.

On the economy of the country, the diplomat said that he would continue to use his position to attract American investments into Nigeria, adding that the Federal and state governments must make the environment conducive for such.
