A fashion designer, Toheeb Razak, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly hitting his 64-year-old landlord, Theophilus Afolayan, with a plastic chair while resolving a conflict. It was gathered that the wives of the two men were engaged in a fist fight.

Our correspondent learnt that while Afolayan tried to separate the women, the 27-year-old suspect hit him on the face with a plastic chair.

The prosecution alleged that the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by hitting his landlord with a plastic chair following an argument.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Aondohemba Koti, told the court that the accused committed the offences on November 4, 2018 around 9.30am at 9 Olomowewe Street, Mushin, Lagos.

Koti said the accused, who also pulled off the complainant’s daughter’s hair, landed a fist blow on Afolayan’s left eye following a disagreement.

“The wives of both the complainant and the accused were fighting. The complainant tried to separate them when the accused suddenly hit him with a plastic chair on his face,” he said.

The accused was arraigned on two counts of breach of peace and assault. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 168 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

He said Section 173 of the law provided three years imprisonment for assault, while Section 168 stipulated six months jail term for breach of peace.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs M. O. Tanimola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N80,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

Tanimola said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

She adjourned the case till December 5, 2018.
