Group of youths including a native doctor on Thursday stormed Sapele local government secretariat to protest against the renewal of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company operational licence.

The protesters urged the local government to avoid being compromised and demanded for the non-extension of the licence of Vigeo Holdings Limited, the firm in charge.

They said the company has not added any value to what it met, adding that the region has been groaning under heavy estimated bills with deliberate non-supply of meters.

The groups also said the BEDC has refused to provide transformers and electrical poles including ancillaries.

The group described the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) reported one-year extension of the company’s licence as unacceptable.

Few months ago, civil society, communities and electricity consumers gathered in their numbers to protest in Benin city, Edo state against the purported plan to renew the operational license of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

The Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), Osaze Edigin said the peaceful demonstration which will last for three days is to draw the BPE attention to the “incompetence of the distribution company.”
