Are you and your partner in the habit of calling each other such pet names as ‘honey,’ ‘sweetheart,’ ‘babe,’ etc? Apparently, these nicknames are not only adorable to hear, but they can also actually make your relationship stronger.
One study found that couples who refer to each other in such cute ways report more satisfaction in their relationship. In the survey, people who use pet names are 16 percent more likely to be happy in their relationship than those who don’t. The study also found that men were more likely to use pet names for their partner than women.
Why are pet names so appealing in a relationship
It’s possible that being called these nicknames takes us back to our childhood experiences. Many of us were called pet names by our parents when we’re younger. It was a gesture associated with love and nurturing. While this may sound weird, the loving pet names we were called made us feel loved and secure. So it’s no surprise that when we’re in a relationship with partners that use similar terms of endearment, it takes us back to those feelings.
If you don’t already call each other by pet names and are not sure how to start, be rest assured that this is a habit that grows on you. So, just start and give it time. It will become a part of you sooner than you think.
There are other factors that can help you build a strong relationship. For instance, these three habits will put you on the right track.
