He pops the question. You say yes, and then months pass, then years. And you start wondering if there will ever be a wedding. How long should you wait before doing something about it?
Being engaged is supposed to mean you and your partner are one step closer to your future. Your commitment to each other becomes more solid. You’ve both made a promise that you’re all in. And yes, there should be wedding plans.
When a long engagement is justified
No one can tell you exactly how long you should both be engaged before tying the knot. But a simple rule of thumb is if you’re both good with the way things are, you communicate effectively and you both have some idea of when the wedding will take place, then you’re good. Some couples may choose a lengthy engagement if they have a goal they are working toward. But if this is is the case, both partners should definitely be on board.
How long is too long?
Since there are no rule books for these things, it’s important that you go with your gut. When you start to feel like things have stretched too far and you guys haven’t even picked a date, it’s time to have a conversation about it. You don’t need to give ultimatums but you do need to express yourself. Ask your partner what’s going on with the wedding issue.
Some men may put an engagement ring on it without actual plans to settle down. Before you know it, you’re going on five years post-proposal and not even a wedding date has been set. It could be his way of keeping you “happy” without making any moves to actually commit. Because this is manipulative, you should not stand for it. If you want to get married and you don’t see a reason to wait too long, be clear about your needs.
The adequate length of engagement is one that you are both fine with. If one person isn’t then there’s a problem. And you have every right to go for someone that’s willing to give you what you need if your partner is hesitant to take that next step with you.
Speaking of ending things, here are five times it’s okay to break off an engagement.
