Braids in all forms and shapes are really great for protective styling. Really great when it’s not threatening to turn you into a mad woman because of the constant itching.
And because scratching your scalp isn’t exactly sexy, your head now becomes a mini drum because you keep tapping it. All in an effort to relieve the discomfort. But why does this even happen? And how can you stop your braids from itching?
It turns out there is actually a reason your scalp gets really itchy when you have braids on. Apparently, synthetic extensions popularly called ‘’attachment’’ used for braids is coated with an alkaline solution when produced. This solution is supposed to protect the hair from mould and also make it heat safe and wear resistant. All that is great, if only it didn’t make our scalp itch like crazy.
Not to worry though, we know how to stop this itch frenzy. All you need is Apple cider vinegar and water.
Here’s what to do:
Pour a cup of apple cider vinegar or just plain vinegar into a bowl and mix it with some warm water. Remove the extension from the packet and soak it in the mixture for 30 mins – 1 hour
You’ll see a white substance seeping from the hair and floating in the water; that’s the culprit right there. Rinse it thoroughly until the water turns clear and then just hang it to dry. Or if you’re in a hurry, you can blow dry it. Voila! your itch-free attachment is ready for use.
