Three other occupants of the vehicle reportedly sustained varying degrees of injury in the crash.

An eyewitness told Saturday PUNCH on condition of anonymity that there were four occupants in the vehicle, including the driver, when the accident occurred.

“The driver was travelling at high speed, and was making a phone call when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck fell off the flyover and he died on the spot, while the three others were seriously wounded,” the eye witness said.

He stated that sympathisers, who rushed to the scene of the accident, extricated the four occupants from the vehicle.

He added that the victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

“The driver of the truck died at the hospital around 9.30pm,” the eyewitness added.

Director General of Delta State Traffic Management Agency, Mr. Stephen Dieseruvwe, confirmed the accident.

He said, “Before my men got to the scene of the accident this morning (Friday), the truck had been removed. We don’t know the number of casualties involved. We have taken the picture of the damaged flyover and we will get to the route of the incident.”

The accident occurred at about 8.45pm when the truck coming from the Ifaki end of Ifaki – Iworoko – Ado Ekiti Road rammed into the market in the heart of the community.

Apart from the deceased, no fewer than four persons were injured in the incident. No fewer than three shops and a commercial bus with passengers were crushed by the truck. In one of the shops, a barbing salon, there were residents and students charging their mobile telephones.
