A former high school teacher in western Kentucky, USA, has been indicted in federal court, accused of driving a student to an Illinois motel to have sex with her.
A criminal complaint alleges that Stephen P. Maddux attempted to entice two minor students to engage in illegal sexual acts with him between December 2016 and February 2018 while he was employed as a high school teacher.
Victor Zimmerman, superintendent of the Livingston County School District, wrote the Courier Journal in an email that Maddux was employed by the Livingston County Board of Education from July 2011 to October 2018 and assigned to teach at Livingston Central High School in Smithland, Kentucky, about 18 miles outside of Paducah.
Maddux resigned Oct. 23, 2018, and Zimmerman said the reason Maddux gave for his resignation was “generic.”
Zimmerman declined to provide further details on the resignation.
Maddux, 32 , is facing charges of transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity with a minor, production of child pornography, distribution of child pornography and two counts of attempted enticement, according to the indictment filed in U.S District Court in Paducah.
According to court documents, Maddux picked up one of the students in Paducah and drove her to Metropolis, Illinois, where he had rented a room at a Super 8 Motel for the purpose of having sex her.
The girl, referred to as “Jane Doe I” in court documents, told authorities that Maddux took pictures of the two having sex at the motel.
Maddux later sent the images to the girl via Snapchat.
Authorities reviewed Maddux’s Snapchat records after obtaining a search warrant and discovered the sexual images, along with chat logs between Maddux and the student in which he discussed his desire to have sex with her.
Records from the Super 8 motel confirmed that Maddux had rented a room there on Dec. 26, 2016, and March 7, 2017, according to court documents.
During a search of Maddux’s classroom, authorities found two hotel room keys for the Super 8 Motel.
Maddux, who had been living in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, was taken into federal custody Wednesday and made an initial federal court appearance in Nashville, according to online court documents.
He has been transferred to Kentucky to face his charges in U.S. District Court in Paducah.
