A customary court at Oja-Oba, Ibadan, Oyo State, has dissolved a marriage between Sunday Akintayo and his wife, Odunayo, over irreconcilable marital challenges.
The president of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, held that the crisis in the marriage could endanger the life of any of the couple if proactive steps were not taken.
“In the interest of peaceful living, the union between Odunayo and Sunday Akintayo has ceased to be. The custody of the two children produced by the union is awarded to Odunayo,” Chief Odunade said.
The court had heard from Odunayo, who had prayed it for dissolution of the marriage, that her husband was a drunkard who, many times heavily intoxicated, would return home naked.
According to her, whenever she refused to feed Akinatyo, he would break her shop and steal money and other valuable things from it.
She further told the court that since she left her husband’s home, he had been threatening and cursing her through text messages.
She said, “I was enduring his cruelty to me until my parents advised me to leave him and watch whether he would change. He is a wicked man. He is a heavy drinker. He stole my panties and cut my hair. I don’t want him again, please separate us.”
Akintayo was not in the court to defend himself.
The president of the court, therefore, ordered the bailiff in the court to serve him with the judgment of the court.
