A teacher who was jailed for having sex with three of her students has made an emotional apology as she tries to convince officials to release her early.
Thirty-nine-year-old Brianne Altice was sent to prison for having sex with several teenage boys while she was employed by Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, USA.
Now, she has cried and offered an apology at her parole hearing, claiming that she only committed her crimes because she was suffering from low self esteem.
As reported by Deseret News, Altice said: “I am accountable for this. I did this. And with that knowledge comes growth. “I apologise for the role I was supposed to play in their life and I know I didn’t. Now it’s part of their history they can’t erase.”
In 2015, the teacher was sentenced to between two and 20 years in prison for her actions, which included continuing to have a sexual relationship with one of the children even after she had been arrested and was on bail.
This Tuesday was her second attempt to convince the parole board to let her out of prison. Altice was also denied release back in 2017.
At the hearing, she was presented with a letter that was written by one of her victims, but she initially refused to respond to it in order to give him the ‘final word’.
After a pause, she added: “I don’t want to justify, I don’t want to undermine any of his dealing or his experience. I think he has a right to state all this very eloquently.”
If she is released, Altice also claimed that she has a full-time job lined up for when she is back on the outside.
During her time in prison she has been working with a group called Canines With A Cause, who help to pair up military veterans with dogs that have been left in shelters.
Given the nature of her sentence, Altice could be released very soon. However, if she were to serve out the entirety of her sentence, she would remain in prison until 2045.
On top of her job, she has also agreed that she would continue to see a therapist once she is – potentially – released.
