Muhammed Mahmood, Chairman of the Board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and his daughter have been released by his abductors.
The UBEC boss and his daughter were abducted by the gunmen in military uniform at Kurmin Kare on Monday, while their driver was shot dead. The chairman and his daughter were said to be travelling from Kaduna to Abuja when the kidnappers struck on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
A family source said Mohammed, who is also the Director of Buhari Support Organisation, and his daughter, had been released after ransom was paid by the family.
The source said the kidnappers, using the chairman’s mobile phone, had contacted the family on Monday and demanded an undisclosed amount. “The UBEC chairman and his daughter were released around 1.30pm today (Tuesday),” the source said.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the release of Abubakar and his daughter on Tuesday, but declined comment on ransom payment.
Mahmood was abducted alongside his daughter along the Kaduna-Abuja highaway, around Katari, a village few kilometres from Zuba, an Abuja suburb, on Monday while travelling from Kaduna to Abuja.
His driver was shot dead in the operation.
