Sir Sean Connery clasps his doting wife’s hand in one of the last pictures of the couple – taken months before he died after suffering dementia.

It was taken on the pair’s 45th wedding anniversary on the 6 May this year in the Bahamas, where Sean – who died aged 90 – had lived for decades.

The picture has emerged after Sean’s wife Micheline Roquebrune paid tribute to the 007 star as her ‘gorgeous model of a man’.

Revealing how Sean’s final months were blighted by dementia, Micheline, who was married to the Oscar-winning star for 45 years, said: ‘It was no life for him. He was not able to express himself latterly.

‘At least he died in his sleep and it was just so peaceful. I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted.

‘He had dementia and it took its toll on him. He got his final wish to slip away without any fuss.’

The 91-year-old Moroccan-French painter, who met the Scot in 1970 at a golf tournament and became his second wife, added: ‘He was gorgeous and we had a wonderful life together.

In his final few years, Sean rarely left the gated Lyford Cay community where he spent his retirement after packing in acting in June 2006 – becoming a virtual recluse and giving his agent strict instructions to reject all movie offers.

He was also pictured at his 89th birthday celebrations in the Bahamas with son Jason, 57, and his Irish musician partner Fiona Ufton, 53.
