Originally from Benin, Edo State, Nigeria, Ayra Starr was raised in Lagos State, Nigeria. She and her brother (also an artist), who is her only sibling were born into a christian home.
From a young age, Ayra Starr has had a passion for music and modelling. She is known to have composed original songs and written them down in her notebook. She was also an active member of her church choir, which she joined at a young age.

Ayra and her brother, began going to a music studio situated close to her house to make music. She would also record covers of some of her favourite songs and share them to her social media pages.
In 2018, she lost her father who she was very close to. The pain of his demise inspired her to write songs as a tribute to him. Also, in August 2018, she was discovered by and signed to Quove Model Management (A model management, scouting and development company). Her time with Quove Models saw her work with various brands and companies including Fashion Magazine, Mazelle Studio, Esperanza Womens Wear Brand, and more. She also appeared on Eriife’s music video for “Dear Future Wife”.
She was discovered by Don Jazzy who stumbled on some of her covers in 2019. She also signed to his record label, Mavin Records. She was unveiled as Mavin’s new “first lady” in January, 2020 succeeding Tiwa Savage. Her unveiling came with the release of her debut single “Away” and her debut EP “Ayra Starr”. The EP hit number one on Apple Music.
