Willie Garson was born as William Garson Paszamant on February 20, 1964 in Highland Park, New Jersey, USA, to Muriel Paszamant and Donald M. Paszamant. He attended Camp Wekeela and Highland Park High School as a child. In 1985, he got a theater degree from the Wesleyan University. Garson also attended Yale Drama School.
In 2009, he adopted his son, Nathen, who was seven years old at that time.
