Tourist riding bike from London to Lagos narrates his experience at the Sahara desert’
Kunle Adeyanju, the Nigerian tourist on a “charity ride” from London to Lagos, has recounted his experience travelling through the Sahara desert.
The Sahara — said to be the world’s largest hot desert — covers parts of several African nations including Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, and Tunisia.
In a Twitter thread on Monday, the biker revealed he is currently in Nouadhibou in Mauritania.
Adeyanju said he spent day 12 of the trip journeying through disputed territories between Morocco and Mauritania.
The entrepreneur and author also disclosed that the majority of the day’s trip was in the Sahara.
The adventurer described the Sahara as a “scary place”, adding that he heard different voices when stopped to do a short video.
“The entire stretch of the ride today was on the Sahara, I have seen several movies on the Sahara, but nothing compares to seeing and experiencing it in real life,” he wrote.
“The Sahara, doesn’t cooperate with you, it is a tough, desolate, lonely and scary place to be, inspite all, it is beautiful. I stopped at a point in the Sahara to feel the sand and make a video, I was surprised to you are, this is the Sahara!
“And it is true the Sahara is not your friend and it doesn’t forgive nor understand mistakes or ignorance, it just kills you!
“When I stopped to do the video, I kept turning round because I started hearing different voices, and I recall having heard some of the returnee Libya migrants’ share stories on social media that they were hearing and seeing spirits in the Sahara.
“It may sound funny but its true that you hear voices, and you will hear them clearly, but they are not spirit voices and neither are the voices you are hearing coming from around you.
“Because of the strong winds on the Sahara and the relatively flat and bare surfaces, sound waves tend to travel farther, so voices of people from several kilometers away can come out clearly to you.”
Adeyanju had earlier said the trip was to help raise funds toward sustaining Africa’s polio-free status. He also disclosed that his target is to raise the sum of N20 million.
