Czech’s Vondrousova becomes first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon title
Czech’s Marketa Vondrousova defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia on Saturday afternoon to secure the 2023 Wimbledon women’s singles title.
Vondrousova stunned Jabeur to claim a surprise 6-4 6-4 victory, thereby winning her maiden Grand Slam title.
The Czech also became the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title.
Vondrousova, who had a phenomenal start to the game, raced out to a 40-lead before she watched the Tunisian buried a backhand return into the net to gift the opening set to the Czech. 6-4!
She blew the sixth seed away after being on the back foot in the second set to record another win. 6-4!
Following the win, Vondrousova said: “I don’t know what’s happening now. Ons, congratulations, you’re such an inspiration for all of us, I hope you are going to win one day.
“After everything I have been through – I had a cast on this time last year – and now I can’t believe I’m holding this trophy.”
On her part, Jabeur, who was in the final of Wimbledon last year, said Saturday’s defeat was the “most painful loss of my career.”
The Olympic silver medalist, who now has a 3-0 win record over Jabeur, will go home with a cheque of £2,350,000 ($2,741,726).
