In 1989 after his youth service, Amaechi started working for NAN (News Agency of Nigeria). He left his job a few years later for an acting role in his first movie as Akunatakasi in Taboo 1, a Nigerian movie.
Family
He is married and has four children. Amaechi, amongst other Nollywood stars like Chinyere Winifred, Ebere Okaro, joined Dr Chris Eke of Word and Spirit Assembly, Ijegun Lagos as he marked his 40th birthday back in 2015, celebrating it with kikiri maximum prison inmates as well as children at the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice orphanage home. Sickness
In 2016, there were numerous publications on websites that claimed Amaechi was very ill and suffering from diabetes. In 2023 he was diagnosed with kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke during his three-week hospital admission. His cousin, Tony, shared this health update on Facebook, stating that Monagor was currently contending with kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke.
He wrote: Amaechi is currently down with kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke. He had been managing his diabetes over the years and living his life. He is presently undergoing weekly dialysis and other treatments at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi.
“His family had been shouldering the costs for years, until the recent stroke made his case more serious and indeed more expensive to battle alone, hence the publicity. Within the limits of my capabilities, I have done and am still doing my best to assist as much as I can, even reaching out to well-meaning individuals who are donating to this cause.
“Contrary to most online publications, Amaechi is my first cousin. His father and my father are of the same father. We have had a wonderful relationship as members of the same industry, and I am proud of him as a ‘brother.’ Amaechi is so loved worldwide, and his fans, friends, and ndi Obosi have been wonderful so far. Many groups have been donating money for his hospital bills.
“As of today, there’s some improvement. His blood sugar is under control, but he is still on admission, weekly dialysis, physiotherapy, and other treatments. His full treatments and recovery require sustained funding or donations. No amount is too small.”
Death
His death was disclosed by a social commentator, Morris Monye, via his X handle, on Sunday.
Muonagor was said to have suffered kidney failure and was on dialysis.The sudden news of his demise comes just few days after a viral video where he solicited funds to help him have a Kidney transplant. Monye wrote, “Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful. We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India. This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country.”
