NNPC vs Dangote Refinery: The Truth Behind the Viral Petrol Comparison

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd has dismissed a viral video claiming that petrol sold at its outlets is inferior to that refined by Dangote Refinery.

False Claims and Misinformation

In response to the controversial video, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, described the so-called experiment as false and misleading.

See response below:

Soneye said the man’s “assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.
NNPC Ltd reaffirms that its fuel is carefully formulated with one of the best compositions, ensuring optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability for consumers.Furthermore, it is important to emphasise that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was created—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security. Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers

He held that “this misleading video represents yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation. We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians”.
He further warned that “henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law.
“We urge the public to disregard such fabricated content and rely on verified sources for accurate information. NNPC Ltd remains steadfast in its mission to ensure fuel availability, affordability, and quality for all Nigerians while maintaining global industry standards,” he added.

How It All Started

The viral video, created by tech content creator Olatunde Shobajo, popularly known as Valor Reviews, featured a “comparison test” between petrol purchased from an NNPC outlet and MRS filling station, which sources fuel from Dangote Refinery.

At the end of the video, the Dangote petrol reportedly lasted 13 minutes longer, raising concerns among Nigerians. Watch below:

NNPC Sets the Record Straight

In a swift reaction, NNPC Ltd dismissed the claims, stating that the video was based on an amateur, unverified test that lacked professional oversight and credibility.

NNPC reaffirmed that its fuel undergoes rigorous quality control to ensure optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability for consumers.

NNPC Also Sells Dangote-Refined Fuel

Interestingly, NNPC disclosed that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at its Lagos retail stations—where the viral experiment was conducted—actually comes from Dangote Refinery.

This revelation raises serious doubts about the video’s credibility, as it suggests that some of the fuel allegedly being criticized is from the same refinery being praised.

NNPC Warns Against Misinformation

Soneye condemned the viral video as a desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to mislead the public and tarnish NNPC’s reputation.

He warned that legal action will be taken against individuals or groups who deliberately spread false information about the company’s operations.

NNPC’s Commitment to Quality

NNPC assured Nigerians of its continued commitment to:
Fuel availability and affordability
Strict adherence to global industry standards
Transparency and consumer protection

The company urged the public to disregard misleading content and rely on verified sources for accurate information.

As fuel supply dynamics shift with increased local refining, the battle for consumer trust intensifies. But with both NNPC and Dangote Refinery maintaining high industry standards, it’s crucial for Nigerians to focus on facts, not viral experiments.
