The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arraignment of Abiola Odutayo in connection with the tragic death of 32-year-old Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, and co-founder of the startup, Bumpa.
The fatal incident occurred on March 4, 2025, along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Lagos, sparking widespread public outrage and demands for justice. According to eyewitnesses, Odutayo, also identified as Biola Adams-Odutayo, allegedly drove recklessly, failed to yield, and refused to assist the critically injured Teejay—reportedly expressing concern over her car getting stained. Bystanders struggled to get him medical help as multiple hospitals allegedly declined treatment.
In a statement shared on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter), Lagos State Police PRO Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Abiola Odutayo was arraigned on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, after her discharge from the hospital. She is facing charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which resulted in the death of Opayele.
“The court granted her bail and adjourned the case to April 16, 2025,” Hundeyin added.
The police also reassured the public of their commitment to transparency and justice. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Teejay’s family and friends. We remain committed to fairness and due process,” the statement read.
The case has triggered nationwide outrage, especially among Nigeria’s tech and entrepreneurial community. Over 35,000 Nigerians have signed an online petition demanding justice for Teejay. Many are calling for stricter charges such as manslaughter, and have urged the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to take over the case to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.
