Beautiful women come across me all the time; I have never harassed them - Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has responded to the sexual harassment allegation leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, dismissing it as politically motivated.

Speaking at an International Women’s Day 2025 event in Abuja, Akpabio addressed the controversy that has further strained relations between the two lawmakers. His remarks come just days after Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate for six months over alleged violations of legislative rules.

Akpabio’s Defense: “Baseless and Politically Timed”

Akpabio downplayed the allegation, claiming it only surfaced after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Senate seat and committee were reassigned.

“This supposedly happened on December 8, 2023—a day before my birthday, which I publicly celebrated. From that time until now, neither I, my wife, nor any Nigerian ever heard of such an allegation—not even her husband—until her committee and seat were changed.

He also questioned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s credibility, suggesting she had a history of making accusations that were never substantiated:

“Have you ever wondered about the trauma caused by this same woman to others she has accused in the past? None has been proven.”

Political Fallout: What’s Next?

Akpabio has yet to issue a formal statement beyond his remarks at the event, leaving many wondering whether the Senate or other authorities will take further action.

Meanwhile, the suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked reactions, with groups like the Coalition of Women in Governance calling for her reinstatement.

The unfolding drama has ignited debates about power, gender, and influence in Nigeria’s political landscape. Will this controversy fade away, or is this just the beginning of a bigger showdown? Stay tuned.
