Can Hair Relaxers Increase Cancer Risk? Read This Before Your Next Treatment

A study from Boston University has revealed a shocking link between hair relaxers and uterine cancer. Women who use relaxers more than twice a year or for over five years face a 50% increased risk of developing uterine cancer.

The Risk of Hair Relaxers for Black Women

Many Black women use hair relaxers to achieve a sleek, smooth look. However, research now confirms that these chemical treatments come with severe health risks, including hormone-related cancers like breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer.

Dr. Onyinye D. Balogun, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, warns:

“These straighteners have already been linked to breast and ovarian cancer—now we see the connection to uterine cancer. While more research is needed, we must take this risk seriously.”

Toxic Chemicals in Hair Relaxers

Hair relaxers work by breaking down the natural structure of curly hair, but they contain dangerous chemicals that can be absorbed into the bloodstream, disrupting hormones and increasing cancer risk. Some of the most harmful ingredients include:

  • Formaldehyde – A known carcinogen also used in embalming fluids.
  • Phthalates, Parabens & BPA – Endocrine disruptors that affect hormone balance and increase cancer risk.
  • Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) – A harsh chemical that can cause scalp burns and permanent hair loss.

The Growing Concern in Nigeria

Between 2017 and 2022, Nigeria saw one of the highest growth rates in relaxer sales worldwide (Euromonitor). Despite increasing health warnings, millions of women continue to use these products.

Safer Alternatives to Hair Relaxers

If you’re looking to reduce or stop using hair relaxers, consider these healthier alternatives:

Protective Styles – Braids, Twists, Locs, Wigs, and Weaves.
Silk Press – A heat-straightening method that gives a sleek look without chemicals. Use a heat protectant to prevent damage.
Natural Hair Care – Deep-conditioning treatments and hair masks help soften and define curls.
Texturizers – Milder than relaxers, but still contain chemicals. Use with caution.
Heat-Free Stretching – Try African threading, twist-outs, or braid-outs for a straighter look without damage.

The connection between hair relaxers and cancer is a growing concern. While more studies are ongoing, the risks are too significant to ignore. If you use relaxers, consider reducing their frequency or switching to safer alternatives. Your health matters more than straight hair.
