Japa Regrets: Many Nigerians Abroad Battling Depression – NiDCOM Warns

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has raised concerns over the growing number of Nigerians abroad struggling with regret and depression.

In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Dabiri-Erewa revealed that NiDCOM has been inundated with distress calls from Nigerians who relocated abroad but are now facing harsh realities.

Her response came after UK-based lawyer Dele Olawale warned about worsening conditions for immigrants in the UK. Olawale highlighted that many Nigerians were facing depression, broken families, and financial struggles, advising others to think carefully before relocating.

“Many people are depressed. Many lives are broken. Many families are stranded. Irreversible regret,” Olawale tweeted, cautioning against relocating without a well-thought-out plan.

“The Grass Isn’t Always Greener”

Quoting his post, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to reconsider blind emigration. “I hope this message resonates. We @nidcom_gov have been bombarded with many cases of regrets and depression,” she wrote, emphasizing that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

With Nigeria’s rising economic hardship, inflation, and the soaring cost of living, the “Japa” trend—where Nigerians seek better opportunities abroad—has intensified. However, many who emigrate find themselves struggling with unexpected challenges, sometimes in worse conditions than they left behind.

Dabiri-Erewa has consistently warned against desperate relocation, calling on the media in 2024 to help educate Nigerians on the dangers of moving abroad without adequate planning.

“Please, we appeal to bloggers and influencers: help us warn Nigerians that where they are running to may be worse than where they are leaving,” she pleaded.

Think Before You “Japa”

As migration continues to be a hot topic, experts urge Nigerians to seek proper legal advice and plan strategically before making the life-changing decision to relocate.
