NiMet Warns of Extreme Heat as Temperatures Soar to 42°C Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a Heat Stress Watch, warning of extreme temperatures across the country, with some regions expected to reach a scorching 42°C.

Regions Facing Extreme Heat

According to NiMet’s forecast, the hottest locations will include:

  • Kebbi, Jalingo, and Yola – Expected to hit 42°C
  • Lafia – Forecasted to reach 41°C
  • Minna and Makurdi – Projected to experience 40°C

Overall, northern regions will see temperatures ranging from 36°C to 42°C, while southern states will experience 34°C to 39°C.

Heatwave Impact and Affected States

NiMet has cautioned that a combination of high temperatures and humidity will lead to increased heat discomfort, particularly in the following regions:

  • North Central
  • North West
  • South East
  • South South
  • South West

The specific states most affected include FCT, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Taraba, Zamfara, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, and Delta.

NiMet’s Safety Recommendations

To prevent heat-related illnesses, NiMet advises Nigerians to take the following precautionary measures:
Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Avoid Direct Sunlight – Minimize outdoor exposure, especially during peak heat hours.
Wear Light Clothing – Opt for breathable, loose-fitting clothes.
Limit Outdoor Activities – Reduce strenuous activities during high temperatures.
Protect Vulnerable Groups – Extra care should be given to children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.
