Who Was Adetunji Opayele? The Tragic Death of Bumpa Co-Founder, Teejay

0

Adetunji Opayele was many things—a son, a brother, a friend, and a visionary in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. As the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Bumpa, a retail automation startup, he helped over 60,000 small and medium-sized businesses streamline their transactions.

Fondly called Teejay by those who knew him, he embodied Nigerian excellence, making significant contributions to the country’s startup space. However, his promising journey was cut short on March 4, 2025, in a tragic road accident that has sparked outrage and calls for justice.

What Happened to Teejay?

On March 4, 2025, Teejay had just finished a session at iFitness gym in Victoria Island, Lagos, and was heading home on his power bike. As he rode along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, he had the right of way, but tragedy struck when Biola Adams-Odutayo—who had just left a restaurant—allegedly drove onto the expressway without checking for oncoming traffic, colliding with him.

Despite wearing full safety gear, Teejay was knocked unconscious and left lying on the road.

According to witness accounts and a viral petition, Adams-Odutayo allegedly refused to assist him. Eyewitnesses pleaded with her to help transport him to a hospital, but she reportedly refused, allegedly stating she didn’t want “blood to stain her car.”

Bystanders struggled to find help, eventually convincing an Uber driver to rush him to a hospital. However, two hospitals refused to admit him before a third accepted him. By the time Teejay’s brother arrived at the hospital past midnight, doctors had already pronounced him dead.

Who Is Biola Adams-Odutayo, and What Happened After Teejay’s Death?

Adams-Odutayo is a healthcare professional and the Head of Health at an insurance brokerage firm. However, her actions following the accident have fueled public anger.

According to petitioners, after Teejay was confirmed dead, Adams-Odutayo received medical treatment at the hospital, claiming she was in shock. She allegedly attempted to escape and was detained for just one night before being granted bail.

Petitioners also claim that Adams-Odutayo and her family boasted about having “connections”, which some believe led to her swift release from police custody. When she finally appeared in court, she was only charged with reckless driving—a charge many believe to be too lenient for the circumstances surrounding Teejay’s death.

The court set her bail at ₦1,000,000, with two sureties in like sum, which she met immediately.

Calls for Justice and Public Outrage

Teejay’s tragic death has triggered massive public outrage, with over 35,000 Nigerians signing a petition demanding that the Lagos State Ministry of Justice intervene. Many argue that the charges against Adams-Odutayo should be escalated to manslaughter rather than reckless driving.

The case continues to generate discussions about road safety, justice, and the treatment of accident victims in Nigeria.
