Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic crisis in Nigeria, blaming the hardship on the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking at the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and expanded stakeholders’ summit held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Obi declared that the time has come for Nigeria to be rescued from further economic collapse.
Nigeria is Collapsing – Peter Obi
The former Anambra State governor painted a dire picture of the current economic reality, stating that even individuals who once showed him generosity are now seeking help.
“Those who used to call me to eat and drink with them now beg me for assistance,” Obi lamented.
“Nigeria is collapsing. The numbers are clear. The indices are clear. People are getting poorer every day.”
Obi urged Nigerians not to be afraid to speak out against the growing hardship and to demand accountability from the government.
“Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t do any better. We must speak out when things are going wrong,” he added.
Peter Obi Denies Plans to Leave Labour Party
Amid growing political tensions, Obi also addressed rumors about a possible defection from the Labour Party. He firmly denied the claims, stating:
“I’ve not told anybody that I’m leaving the Labour Party.”
He emphasized that any decisions concerning the future of the party will be taken collectively with its stakeholders.
Labour Party Set to Present Competent Candidates in 2027
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Obi assured Nigerians that the Labour Party will be fully prepared to field the most competent candidates across all levels, including the Presidency, Senate, House of Representatives, and Governorship races.
“We want to correct past mistakes. Anyone seeking to contest under our party must be a committed and competent member—not someone just passing through.”
Labour Party Calls for Unity Amid Internal Disputes
Senator Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, also spoke at the event, calling for reconciliation within the party. Reacting to the recent Supreme Court judgement in her favor, she described it as a victory for democracy and the will of the people.
Despite the ruling, Usman extended an olive branch to Julius Abure and other aggrieved members, urging them to work towards unity for the overall interest of Nigerians.
