Cause of Death
Ifunanya Nwangene died on Saturday, 31st January 2026, after suffering a snake bite at her residence in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to accounts from friends, she was asleep when the snake bit her, and the bite woke her up. Videos that later circulated online showed a snake handler removing a snake from the house as shocked bystanders screamed, “It is a cobra!” It was later revealed that two snakes were found in the house.
After the bite, Ifunanya initially sought help at a nearby clinic but was referred to a hospital due to the absence of antivenom. She was eventually taken to the Federal Medical Centre, where one of the required antivenoms was reportedly available, but the second was not.
Sam Ezugwu, co-founder and music director of the Amemuso Choir, said he left the hospital to search for the missing antivenom, but sadly returned to find that Ifunanya had passed away. He added that members of the choir gathered at the hospital that evening, “hoping that a miracle would happen.”
Her death was officially announced via a social media statement by the Amemuso Choir, which read:
“Amemuso Choir regrets to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano Ifunanya Nwangene who passed away yesterday, 31st January 2026 at Federal Medical Centre due to a snake bite. A rising star, Ifunanya was at the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world. Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed.”
Friends and colleagues described her as humble, intelligent, and immensely talented. Hillary Obinna, a close friend, said, “Everybody is shattered. We could not sleep at night.”
