Donald Trump has signed an executive order to keep illegal immigrant families together after an outcry over children being put in detention centers alone. The order was signed and released Wednesday afternoon, with Trump revealing his arm had been twisted by his wife Melania and daughter Ivanka.
He said: ‘Ivanka feels very strongly, my wife feels very strongly about it, I feel very strongly about it. I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated The president, who was flanked by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Vice President Mike Pence continued: ‘I think anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it.’
The order begins by repeating the president’s desire to ‘rigorously enforce our immigration laws.’ It continues: ‘It is also the policy of this Administration to maintain family unity, including by detaining alien families together where appropriate and consistent with law and available resources.’
It was signed by the president ahead of a trip to Minnesota for a campaign rally, and marks a complete u-turn on his earlier tough talk on the controversial policy, which has been enforced along the United States’ southern border.
