Two military airplanes have collided at the main airport in Sudan’s capital Khartoum.

Video footage shows the Sudanese Air Force planes landing on the same runway, with one crashing into the other at speed.

The Soviet-era Antonov aircraft had landed within seconds of each other when the accident occurred, an airport official said.

‘Eight people were injured and taken to hospital when two military planes collided at Khartoum airport,’ said another official.

The Sudanese military is expected to comment on the accident later on Wednesday.

Photos of the two planes on the runway, shows one of them appearing to have lost its entire nose section in the crash.

The military planes were identified by aviation bloggers as an Antonov An-26 and an Antonov An-32.

The planes, made by the Ukrainian aircraft manufacturing company, are primarily used for surveying and transport.

The Sudanese Air Force reportedly has eight An-26 and six An-32 airplanes.

Wednesday’s accident is the third to have hit Sudan’s ageing military fleet in less than a month.

On September 21, two pilots were killed when their military jet crashed near Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum on the west bank of the Nile.

It came days after a military helicopter crashed on landing in Darfur. All passengers were rescued as the helicopter caught fire.
