Now, we should not really use age as a measure of anything or to set milestones.
However, I think that getting married in your 20s is a bad idea. Well, maybe late 20s is okay, but early 20s? What do you know about marriage? Here’s what I think. It can work, if you’re both very mature, because marriage will test you, you know each other really well, you have been together for a significant amount of time, you have seen each other in your absolute worst and you’re financially stable. Otherwise, you might wanna wait till later and here’s why.
1. You don’t know what you want in your 20s.
Well, some people do. But to be honest, you’re still in the learning process. You’re inexperienced at this whole adulting thing. You’re trying to figure out your career path, what you want in life, what you want in a relationship, and what not. You’re in the process of self-discovery.
2. You’re not financially stable in your 20s.
Unless mommy and daddy are paying your bills, it’s rare to be financially stable in your 20s. This is the time you’re starting out in your career after finishing school and shifting between jobs, trying to settle for that one job that you feel best suits you and pays you well. Love will not pay bills at the end of the day.
3. Your 20s are the time to be spontaneous and have fun.
Getting married so young is like leaving a party at 9.00pm – the best is yet to come. Marriage ties you down in a way. Take the opportunity to get an education, travel the world, get your finances in check, learn to be happy on your own, date different people, go through heartbreaks. You know? Get your ducks in a row so to speak so that by the time you’re well into your 30s, you’re more experienced. You’re not looking for someone to be the center of your happiness, but someone who will come into your life and add value in it.
4. Your 20s are for dating.
You need to know what kind of a person you want to end up with. Forever is a long time to wake up next to someone who does not make you go Gaga. Take time. Date different people, from different walks of life. You might be surprised that what you thought was your type is not really your type. Imagine raising a family in your 20s and have nada time for yourself? You think you will travel later in life? No, take the opportunity while you’re still young, energetic and when you have the time!
