In-laws do not have to be outrightly cruel for them to be problematic. It can become an issue in your marriage if your in-laws often overstep. And when this is the case, then the only way to ensure your marriage isn’t negatively affected is to take action.
Here are a few boundaries you need to set if you suspect your in-laws may be a little troublesome.
All final decisions should be made by the couple
It’s okay for your partner to confide in his family about certain issues and you’re allowed to do the same too. However, when it comes to making the final decisions that concern you and your marriage, you and your partner have to make it together. You should not encourage situations where each spouse makes plans with their parents about your relationship without talking to you first. Put up a united front right from the beginning and that will save you a lot of drama.
You should be informed of impending visits
When you have in-laws who overstep, they often see no problem with coming around without prior notice. If this is fine with you and your partner, great. But if not, both spouses should speak to their respective relatives about giving a heads-up before visiting.
No form of abuse will be accepted
While you should respect your in-laws, you have to keep in mind that this is a two-way street. Insist that any form of abuse, verbal, emotional, or physical, will not be tolerated. You don’t have to be buddies with your in-laws but you can still live harmoniously if everyone respects each other.
You don’t have to do things their way
Troublesome in-laws usually assume that you should do some things just because that was how they did it. This could be related to raising your children or dealing with marital issues. But from the get-go, make sure they get the message that you and your partner plan to do things your own way. Don’t apologize for having a different opinion or trying something new. As long as you’re fine with your decisions as a couple, then relatives should accept them too.
