Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly accepted a one-year prison sentence for tax fraud in Spain. The 56-year-old will not spend any time behind bars, though, as Spanish authorities tend not to enforce sentences of less than two years. Mourinho was accused of owing €3.3m (£2.9m) to the Spanish tax authorities, relating to undeclared image rights revenue when he was manager of Real Madrid back in 2011/12.

The Portuguese will reportedly have to pay a €2m (£1.75m) fine alongside the suspended prison sentence. According to Spanish outlet El Pais, Mourinho attended the Provincial Court on Tuesday to accept his punishment.

Mourinho has previously denied owing money to the Spanish state. ‘I left Spain in 2013 with the information and the conviction that my tax situation was perfectly legal,’ Mourinho said after a hearing back in November 2017.
